Review – Hogan’s Dry Cider

I enjoy reading the over seas blog posts such as this review from Real Cider Reviews. Most of the European and Australian ciders are not available in my neck of the woods.  As a matter of fact, most American ciders are not available in my neck of the woods.  So I consider it a lesson in cider culture throughout the world of ciders and get to see how other cider nerds view their favorite drink. Not Lost But Busy

Cider Monger is back but he has been quite busy.  A pioneer and a strong influencer of hard cider. See what he has to say.

Where’s Cider Monger??? Back on the Wagon, Cider Wagon that is

…I’ve been meaning to write to you, but have been very busy as of late. Besides, doing the Peter Mitchell Cider Course, I bought a house, new truck, did the Seattle Cider Summit, and helped organize the first Cider Festival in BC; CiderWise. I’ve also been busy working on a few events to come to help bring awareness to Cider in BC. Continue reading

And Now for Something Completely Different…Fox Barrel Pacific Pear

Fox Barrell

I got a lovely sampler box from Crispin Ciders a few weeks ago, and I’m making my way through it slowly. It is my first box of free cider for reviewing after all. Tonight though I wanted to try something light and refreshing, cooling if I could get. it. So I decided to pick up one of the perries they sent from Fox Barrel. Fox Barrel calls them pear ciders but makes a point to emphasize that they come completely from pears. In my mind, that makes them perries. I know that perry is not a familiar term in the United States, but I’m a bit of a stickler for words. A mildly alcoholic beverage made from pressed pears is a perry. Anyhow, I’m curious to try one. I’ve not had more than a sample pour of a perry in quite a few years.  READ MORE

Rich’s Golden Years Yarlington (SV) (2011) Cider Review

richs_yarlington

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really do like the Golden Years range from Rich’s. Some of their cider has just got a bit samey over time, but thankfully these ones are interesting and different. The Yarlington variety is the next one on the list and I’ve seen that successfully work as a SV cider with many producers over the past year. Oliver’s probably have made my favourite version of it thus far. Yarlington apples are traditionally one of the vintage cider apple varieties and are bittersweet. This should hopefully translate to a cider that is high in tannins and low in acidity. Though as I’ve experienced previously, this is not always the case. I better open up this bad boy and see what it has to offer…  READ MORE

Dr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider

IMG_7267

I don’t know about you, but I am thinking some clever marketing has gone into this cider label. Dr Pilkington’s Miracle Cider would have to be one of the cheekiest, mysterious and somewhat endearing cider label concepts on the market today. ‘Made under Doctors orders’ and ‘When it works it’s a miracle’ are just a couple mischievous little slogans which are pasted over the bottle. A Tasmanian Cider Maker tweeted to me recently that “cider should be fun”, and you can’t help think this statement holds true for Dr Pilkington’s. You get that sense of
a fun, tongue in cheek beverage designed for simple drinking. I also can’t ignore the awesome larger 500mL VB hand grenade bottle shape, which reminds me of the old school long necks  READ MORE

Haymaker is a light, semi-sweet effervescent cider made from late season dessert apples.HaymakerSemiSweet

Haymaker is particularly refreshing on hot days or whilst making hay. Named after the old English tradition of paying farmhands in cider. A worker who received plentiful shares of cider would prove to be a good “Haymaker” by day’s end

The bittersweets lend subtle tannins to the cider while the Liberty provides an acid balance. After fermentation, the unique flavors of the Liberty are distinguishable. A crisp, dry finish can be attributed to the slight effervescence of this cider

5 Hard Cider Cocktails to Try

cocktails

By itself a good hard cider is a wonderfully refreshing, mildly intoxicating beverage that is a terrific summer brew alternative for non-lovers of beer (me).  Add a little this, a little that, and you have a cocktail with some extra zing, more flavor dimensions and enough volume for multiple large sips while you stand around the grill. Here are five hard cider cocktail recipes to try in the upcoming months.

5. Oriental Peacock. The perfect pairing for chicken and shrimp teriyaki skewers or just those frozen vegetarian egg rolls from Trader Joe’s.

  • 4 ounces hard cider
  • 1.5 ounces melon liqueur
  • 0.5 ounces lychee liqueur
  • 0.5 ounces vodka

Combine all ingredients in a highball glass, stir and add two to three ice cubes. FOUR MORE COCKTAILS

Somerset Apple Cider Cake

100_9474

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of Victoria Sponge cakes, or chocolate sponges etc, one thing I never bake is a cake that has fruit it in, I’m not usually a big fan. I think the fear comes from Christmas fruit cake which I cannot stand, I’m on of those people do that ‘yuck face’ whenever any time of fruit cake is mentioned.

So I thought it was time to change this, it was really cold yesterday when I got in from work and it actually felt a bit wintery, so naturally I needed to bake to fill the house with heat and a yummy smell. So to break my no-fruit baking streak I went through one of my favourite recipe books  READ MORE

Blazing Star Sparkling Peach Cider

BSSP-Label-29-Jan-2013-cropped-171x300

I contacted Greer Stangi from T.S. Smith And Sons to discuss how I could find the Blazing Star Sparkling Cider and congratulate them on another product.  Coincidentally enough, that upcoming weekend, T.S Smith hosted a spring fest at the farm. There would be wagon rides, cooking demonstrations, live music and of course, sampling of the new cider.  I was hoping to take my female dominant family but they had hair cuts that same day.  So I was on my own.  READ MORE

Cider Review: Val d’Ornón Sidra de Asturias Natural: Cider52

Overall Impressions: Funk forward with blossoming apple flavors. Old World style with balanced astringency and acid. Another cider that got us thinking about the similarities and differences between Spain’s Asturian sidras and the UK’s 3 Counties ciders,   the presence, quality, and unique expression of acidity in these two traditional regional cider styles  READ MORE

Thatchers Rose Cider Review

thatchers_rose

Once upon a time I believe this was called Katy Rose and was made from the Katy apple. Now they have ditched the Katy part of the name and is just called Rose. I’m not sure if that’s because it is not just the Katy apple now or just a marketing rebrand. Either way, this is a very red/rose looking cider and well, it just doesn’t look like a cider. Where has the red colour come from? Artificial colourings?  READ MORE
